Along with Tourette's Action we started an online petition to raise awareness of the Medias misconception that everyone who as the Tourette Syndrome swear and curses uncontrollably and therefore should be the butt of Jokes! When the reality of living life with Tourette Syndrome is far from a comedic sketch, or the village idiot image that book and card publishers feel they have a right profit from someone else’s sorrow.
To you media and book publishers or comedy script writers , I say this, Tourette Syndrome is a disability, and the vast majority of people living with this condition do not have Coprolalia the involuntary swearing or the involuntary utterance of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks , this condition totally changes one’s life, in my case going undiagnosed totally wrecked my education , I spend most of my days inside my house due to severe motor and vocal tic’s which basically rule my life, but I am one of a very small percentage that have the most severe form of Tourette’s , I am not out for pity, but I am out for empathy for the hundreds of thousands of men , women and children who live with this condition worldwide ,the children that are bullied the adults that are discriminated against in the work place, the parents whose children have this condition .
Would you think it was appropriate to make fun of other disabilities, maybe a comedy book or Humorous greeting card about Spina bifida or cerebral palsy, no I don’t think so! So what gives you the right to poke fun of skit and laugh at TS? The only way forward to change your view of Tourette Syndrome, is to educate you to inform you of the facts about Tourette’s, so you can then see Living with Tourette Syndrome is No Joke! Below is a link to a video made by my good friend Cliff O'Sullivan and myself listing the facts
And www.tourettes-action.org.uk will be more than happy to inform and educate you about Tourette Syndrome
